TO OUR The former Officers and Crews should be proud to be represented by such a fine gentleman. He has been a constant observer of this website like he should be as a former commanding officer. Thank you skipper for the big BRAVO ZULU that you gave to me for all my work on the website.
Men you might think that you were pulling something over on the Captains of the MASON when you served in her. However, the ship wasn't that big and news traveled fast as some of you found out. I remember when I was serving in the MASON the year was 1949. It was the only time that the news didn't travel fast. In fact it didn't travel at all. The Skipper was, Captain George Bullen, and he was one of the best. We were making the rounds of the Pacific Ports that year and it was the last cruiser in the MASON for both of us. The crew decided to buy a going away gift for the skipper. There were three of us on the purchase committee. We were at Hong Kong, China and we decided on a portable bar. Of course that called for glasses to go with the bar. We also needed the booze to go with the bar and glasses. We decided to wait until we got to the states to purchase the booze. We waited until the Captain was ashore and sneaked the bar and glasses aboard. I was in charge of all the magazines and handling rooms at the time and we had one handling room that was empty and real handy. We moved the cache into the empty handling room and I locked it up. When Saturday inspections came around I told the skipper that it was empty and had just been painted or the paint never dried right and we had to redo it. He was about to call my buff I think. Needless to say when we hit San Diego the booze was purchased and the bar and glasses were taken to his house and presented to him. He ask us all to help commission the bar which we were happy to comply. I finally told him that I didn't want to be arrested for breaking safety regulation by storing the bar and glasses in the handling room. He said "so that is why all the wet paint stories were about". If you every get to Washington, DC area drop-in on George Bullen Jr. and have a drink served from the bar. But, please don't break the glasses.
