A MEMORIAL TO George T. (Joe) Josifek
Death: June
20,2003
Chief Henriott,
I was reviewing some websites to learn more about my dad, George T. (Joe) Josifek. Only recently (some 50 years after the fact) did I learn he was on the Oakland. He was then FC1. He came to the Oakland following being at Pearl when the Japs bombed, and surviving the sinking of the Chicago, CA 29, at the Battle of Rennell Island near Guadalcanal, Jan, '43. When he left the Oakland circa '45 (before the end of the war), he went to the H.F. Bauer, DM 26, where he left the Navy in '47 to marry my mother and adopt my brother and me. He didn't talk much about the war (it was only a few years ago that I found out he was at Pearl--after the last movie came out). My dad died last Friday, June 20, in Roseburg, Or. "...and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people." Gen 25:8 While he didn't talk much about the war, he talked often about his shipmates and the camaraderie. I followed him and served in the Navy '59-'63, and left as FT2. I had the honor to have served on the U.S.S. THE SULLIVANS DD 537. Thank you
for
the website, and your
service.
With deepest gratitude, Knute Josifek
