Born: 6 Aug 1922: Brooklyn,
NY Father
served as an ensign in WWI Joined the Navy
in Feb 41 (felt the war was coming) and had Boot Camp at Great Lakes. Served
on the USS Constitution - polishing the old guns! Joined the USS
Perkins (DD
377) In Pearl Harbor two weeks after it was bombed. Was in many battles
to include Savo Island,
Guadelcanal,Tassaferonga
(we lost), Coral Sea. Was a machinist
mate
- stated Petroleum jelly really saved them from burns. Served as a gun
captain for the Five Inch on the USS Perkins. DD-377 -Perkins(Mahan
Class) Laid
down by Puget Sound Navy Yard August 15 1934. Launched December 31
1935 and commissioned September 18 1936. Sunk after collision with
Australian troop
ship off Cape Vogel New Guinea November 29 1943. Had a nice leave in Australia.
Said the Perkins had the best coffee, they spiked it and gave it only
to
the
Perkins XO. Complained about the spoils of war: Everytime a Jap island
was captured the men had rice three times
a day but the poor officers had to make do with
steak and ice cream!
He then joined the USS
Oakland.
Sailed off Guam and was
in the massive
typhoon off the Phillipines. Honorable discharged
in 1946 with some disability.
Florence & Frederick
Graduated
from Long Island University - degree
in Biology
1947. Married
Florence Goldstein - 1948.
Son
Fred born in 1949. Son John born 1951. Daughter Marilyn
born 1953. Son William born 1957.
Worked for Tuna
Commision, as a
Park Naturalist in Yosemite, Pep's Store in
San Pedro. Last sea trip
was off
South America on a Tuna Clipper. Inspector until 1973.
Worked in Sacramento for the State of California and then retired in
1976. His
wife died in 1975. His interests included Naval history, model ships,
astronomy,
camping and travel (he went to Hawaii, and Europe twice).
Frederick R. Kirschman
The epitath on his grave
is very
simple but quite appropriate:
Beloved Father and Husband.
He
always believed in doing his duty.
