 | Fulton County, an area of 367 square miles, located in the North Central part of Indiana, was organized in 1836 and was approved by the Governor of Indiana on January 23, 1836, to receive full rights and jurisdiction as a county. This jurisdiction became effective on April 1, 1836. |
| Rochester, the principle town of Fulton County, was made the county seat on June 15, 1836, was incorporated in 1853, and then became a city in 1910. |
| The first Fulton County jail, a 16 x 16 ft. two-story log structure, was erected in September, 1837, and stood between what is now Madison and Monroe Streets in Rochester, due east of the court house. The construction cost of the jail was $550.00 The jail contained only one prison cell, and entrance to the cell was made by means of a trap-door by which the prisoner descended into by way of ladder. This jail was operated by the sheriff and one deputy. The jail burned in about 1845. |
| The current Fulton County jail, built in 1985, is located at 815 Madison St., Rochester. It employs 25 persons and has a jail capacity of 35. |
| In Fulton County's 157 years of existence, the population has grown from an approximated 4,000 persons, as recorded in 1896, to the current population of over 19,000. During this time 42 persons have served as sheriff in Fulton County, including the current sheriff Roy D Calvert. |
