JULY 2007
4th of July Prayer
“Lord, thou who art the way, the truth, and the life;
hear us as we pray for the truth that shall make all free. Teach us that
liberty is not only to be loved but also to be lived. Liberty is too precious a thing to be buried in books. It
costs too much to be hoarded. Help us see that our liberty is not the right to
do as we please, but the opportunity to please to do what is right.” – Rev. Peter Marshall, Chaplain of the United
States Senate in 1947.
Calling All
World War II Veterans
A nonprofit group is assisting elderly combat veterans
who want to visit the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., before they die. Relying on private donations and
volunteer pilots, Honor Flight files in the veterans in their 80s and 90s, and
covers all their costs, including airfare, food, tour-bus service, and oxygen
and wheelchairs for the infirm. The most recent contingent of 600 ex-servicemen
began arriving last [month]. “We feel that World War II veterans have given
enough, “said Earl Morse, a retired Air Force captain who founded the service.

Why Call Hospice?
From the National Institute of Nursing
Research: "Families report that dying relatives in the last weeks of life
have much more pain and other physical distress, e.g., nausea, shortness of
breath, than physicians and nurses think they have,"
.... explains the need for quality hospice care
as the ideal alternative to routine hospital care or nursing home care during
the last months of life.

Bereavement Support Group
The next Bereavement Support Group meeting will be on
Thursday, July 19th at 7:00 pm
in the Hope Hospice office at 420 Main Street in Rochester. This one hour
meeting is open to anyone who has lost a loved. Chaplain Ronald Purkey will be the
group leader. Steven Tibbetts’ thirty minute video, “Recognizing Fear and Anger” will be shown.
Tibbetts says, “Two of the powerful dynamics of grief
are fear and anger. People experience fear around loss because they find
themselves asking the question ‘What do I do now that this has happened?’ They
fear for their identity. They find themselves asking the question ‘Who am I
now?’ The second part of the video deals with anger as it relates to grief and
loss. Many people stay angry at the deceased for dying. They feel the sense of
abandonment in their lives and don't have ample coping skills to deal with the
anger that they are experiencing. This video offers helpful methods in dealing
with fear and anger as people experience grief.”
